What's the difference between a sleeper shack and a day shack?

Sleeper shacks (Ice Castles) have beds, full kitchens, and bathrooms — you fish late, sleep on the ice, and are on the bite at first light. Day shacks are heated daytime setups — no beds, no overnight stay, off the ice the same day. Day-shack guests often pair with one of our partner rentals nearby (see the Lodging page).

Is bait included?

Yes — bait is provided on every shack stay and SnoBear trip. You bring your own rods, reels, tackle, and tip-ups.

What about SnoBear trips — per person or per trip?

Per trip. One price for the whole group, up to 4 guests. Weekend, weekday, and early-bird (3+ weeks out) rates apply. Standard trip is 8 hours, out-and-back from the meeting spot.

Where do I sleep if I book a day shack?

Day shacks are day-use only. Most out-of-town guests stay at one of three Northern Rentals properties within 25 minutes of Webster — Alley Oasis (in Webster), Main Street Manor (Bristol), or Roslyn Creamery (Roslyn). See the Lodging page for details and direct booking links.

How does day-shack booking work? It shows a check-in and check-out date.

For day shacks, your trip is the check-in date. The check-out date is just how the booking system reserves time on the calendar — you're not staying overnight.

Webster, South Dakota — the heart of the glacial lakes region. Specific meeting locations are confirmed after booking based on ice conditions and where the bite is hottest.

Do I need a South Dakota fishing license?

Accepted Answer

Yes — every guest who fishes needs a valid South Dakota fishing license. Pick one up online before your trip at gfp.sd.gov.

What's the weight limit on the SnoBear?

Accepted Answer

1,100 lb total, including the guide. Plan on roughly 220 lb per guest as a working average — if your group is heavier than average, give us a heads up at booking.

Do I need to sign a waiver?

Accepted Answer

Yes — every guest signs a waiver before heading onto the ice. We send it digitally as part of your booking confirmation.

What if the weather or ice conditions change?

Does my guide stay overnight in the sleeper shack?

Accepted Answer

No. Your guide is your on-ice support — they check in, deliver bait and supplies, and stay available for questions — but they don't sleep in the shack with you.
